“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).
There are two types of freedom. One is external, the other internal. When it comes to external freedom, we thank God that we live in one of the freest countries in the world. We enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of mobility, freedom to elect our governmental representatives, or throw the rascals out, and freedom to go as far as our intelligence, education, and effort take us.
We enjoy freedom of religion and freedom from religion if we choose. The Declaration of Independence states these things with clarity and eloquence saying, “. . . all men are created equally, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
The good news is Jesus Christ can free us from all forms of evil that enslave us. He is the sinner’s Abraham Lincoln. If Christ has set us free, we are free indeed! We can be thankful for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, but we can be even more thankful for the freedoms we enjoy as Christians.
