THE IMPORTANCE OF CHRISTMAS

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, . . .” (John 2:1)

“What’s the big deal about Christmas?” the young man asked as he and a small group were discussing the holidays. “I think Easter is better,” he went on to say, “the resurrection and all that.”
There are at least five things that make Christmas (the birth of Christ) a big deal.

1. Christmas proves that God keeps His word. Centuries before Christ’s birth, God said, “. . . a child shall be born to a virgin! And she shall call him Immanuel (meaning, ‘God is with us’)” Isaiah 7:14.

2. Christmas proves that God loves us. John writes, “For God so loved the world (you and I) that he gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

3. Jesus brought light (spiritual understanding) into the world. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

4. Jesus brought greater life into the world. He said, “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10). That refers to both the quality and quantity of life.

5. His birth started him on a path that would lead to his cruel suffering and death on the cross. He died for sinners (meaning all of us). Because he did, we can have our sins forgiven and receive eternal life. “. . . Jesus said, everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day” (John 6:40).
What’s the big deal about Christmas? The birth of Christ, that’s the big deal! Without his birth (incarnation), there would be no resurrection, and we would still be wandering in sin and darkness.

Joy to the world, the Lord has come!
